Understand the lifecycle of a fly - and the impact on your business

Written by Nathalie Leblond

This blog post contains a useful infographic to understand the lifecycle of a fly, as well as the impact flies can have on your business.

A fly infestation can spell disaster – flies are one of the insects most likely to cause damage and disruption to a food business. They pose a significant health risk to staff, customers, and product by spreading disease and contaminating goods.

Flies have a short lifecycle. They multiply rapidly, with some fly species able to mature from eggs to adults in just seven days under the right conditions. The infographic below illustrated this clearly.

As you can imagine, this can cause huge problems for businesses, especially as the weather warms up.

What keeps flies away?

Prevention is, more often than not, better than cure. But with flies becoming ever more resistant to insecticide, it’s important to take a proactive, preventative approach against infestations to ensure that the risk is managed before it starts to affect your bottom line. Rentokil has the solution: Lumnia.

Scientific innovation and expertise has helped Rentokil design a commercial fly-control solution that effectively attracts and kills flies both sustainably and hygienically by using high-attraction LED lamps.

Find out more about LED lamps in our blog: "Why LED's make for a better Insect Light Trap (ILT)". You may also be interested in downloading our infographic on LED efficacy in fly control unit's and why it's important to businesses.

  • Combines LED light technology with unrivalled scientific innovation and expertise – to deliver total peace of mind.
  • Hides captured flies from view and helps prevent cross-contamination
  • The open/close feature makes units easy to service, so there’s minimal disruption to your business
  • Range of units in different sizes and a versatile design to suit different environments

I joined Rentokil Initial South Africa in 2004 as the PA to the MD, and after 6 months maternity leave I re-joined the Company in 2009 as the Marketing Co-ordinator for Rentokil. I'm now the Marketing Communication Manager for Rentokil Initial. I'm still terrified of cockroaches (Americana's only!) but the rest of the creepy crawlies we deal with don't really bug me (see what I did there?), so I guess I'm in the right industry! I am passionate about what we do here at Rentokil Initial and also write for our Hygiene Blog, which can be found at blog.initial.co.za, and our Ambius blog - https://www.ambius.co.za/blog. Life outside of Rentokil Initial mostly revolves around my daughter, who has just turned twelve, and my husband (who is a bit older). I love living in Cape Town and wouldn't trade living here for anywhere else in the world.
