When I came across a 2018 article published by the New York Post entitled “Rat breaks into ATM and eats $18,000 worth of cash” my first thought was that this had to be fake news! But considering the source (the NY Times is usually pretty reputable) I decided to investigate further and to my surprise, a rat did indeed shred $18,000 in Indian rupee notes to make himself a very expensive nest. The rat was found dead in the ATM (which just goes to show that you can't take it with you!) - not that I’m surprised, we all know that money isn’t particularly clean! (But that’s a topic for the Initial Insights Blog another day.)
Although this particular incident sits at the extreme end of the scale, pest infestations account for an estimated £11.8 billion lost every year to business revenues. These losses are mainly accrued from damage to stock caused by contamination and breakage, and operational disruption caused by both damage to equipment and the downtime caused by failed audits and health and safety non-compliance.
You might be thinking that these sorts of numbers don’t apply to your business. Or that because you work for a medium sized professional firm that works in an office environment, pest control is the least of your worries. I would like to suggest that your server room is a very appealing home for pests like rats and cockroaches, as is your archive room, and the damage that pests can cause in such sensitive environments is huge.
However, we typically find that businesses that are office based (rather than in a manufacturing or food retail environment) tend to want to weigh up the cost of contracting a pest control service provider versus doing it themselves.There is a misconception that DIY is more cost effective. In reality, this option could be effective if you have;
- knowledge of the different pests that are likely to be a risk in your specific environment, and their breeding cycles
- the right advice or knowledge around which pest control product or method is the most effective to manage the infestation
- the resources to manage and monitor your office pest control solution
As pest control is not your core business I would ask D-I-WHY? With a quick paper napkin exercise I’d like to suggest that the DIY option isn’t necessarily cheaper (and certainly isn't easier).
