In this blog we will be listing 5 simple tips for keeping flies out of your office and thus keeping staff healthy and happy.
During my years working for the pest control company Rentokil, I’ve had many discussions with my peers about which pests they find most annoying. More often than not the answer has been flies. I can only assume that this is because unlike most other pests flies unashamedly invade our personal space, nonchalantly buzzing in our faces, and making no attempt to hide.
More than just annoying, flies can impact productivity in the workplace
However, did you know that flies do more than just annoy us? In an article that we wrote earlier in the month (Are flies affecting productivity? Lumnia can help) we went into detail about how flies can actually negatively impact productivity in a business. This is because compared to pests like rodents and cockroaches, flies are responsible for causing the highest number of staff illnesses. Flies can transmit a multitude of different pathogens.
Furthermore, the presence of flies in the workplace can also contribute to lowering staff morale – thus affecting productivity (which is also bad for the bottom line).
Here are 5 simple tips for keeping flies out of your workspace, and this keeps staff healthy, happy and productive:
1. Deny flies access:
You can do this relatively easily by keeping your window and doors closed – as this is the most common way flies enter the building.
Another solution is to install fly screens on windows – especially around kitchen and waste areas – if keeping windows closed at all times is not an option.
2. Have a dedicated eating area
Employees eating at their desk attract flies and other pests (like cockroaches) due to the food and debris leftover. Your daily cleaning can’t solve this problem, so why not invest in techno hygiene services? This treatment ensures your office equipment is cleaned and sanitised by removing grime, food particles, skin cells, saliva and other debris from office equipment such as telephones, keyboards, monitors, CPUs, photocopiers, fax machines, shredders etc.
Alternately, make sure there is a dedicated lunchroom/canteen which is cleaned thoroughly every day.

3. Clear and seal dustbins
Ensure that office bins are sealed and cleared regularly as open bins attract flies and many other pests. Large rubbish bins should be kept far away from the office building as they are often breeding sites for flies.
4. Clean drains
Ensure drains are kept clean and free of debris to reduce fly breeding sites. Drains are also potential breeding sites for cockroaches as they provide the perfect environment for them to proliferate (dark and wet!). Did you know that cockroaches can come up your drains? Ensure a cockroach-free and fly-free drain with Rentokil’s drain cleaning service.
5. Install a Lumnia fly unit
For peace of mind get a Lumnia insect light trap installed. Lumnia will help exterminate flies in your workspace – it is designed to effectively eliminate flies in the most energy-efficient manner. Lumnia ILTs are 61% more energy efficient than traditional electric fly killers due to their use of LED bulbs.
