Back to work? What’s waiting for you at the office?

Level 4 lock down means that some South Africans are back to work this week, with others getting ready for an imminent return.  But do you know what might be waiting for you at the office?

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post about the 4 most problematic pests in empty buildings, listing them as rodents, cockroaches,  flies and birds.  Of course, just about any pest left to their own devices for 6 weeks or more is going to cause problems in your building, which is why I thought I would share these photographs taken by a colleague’s husband. He went back to the office last week to check up on the building before opening up on Monday for those employees that could return under level four lockdown rules, and he found this…

Can you guess which pest caused this damage?

This is termite damage!

Whilst I didn’t list them in my previous blog on pest risks to empty buildings,  termites can cause a substantial damage to both the fabric and contents of a building.  These are copier boxes that the termites have decimated.

There is a mistaken belief that if you property is brick, you don’t need to worry about termite damage. We covered this in a previous myth busting post “Am I safe in a brick house?”  and we looked at the financial implications of termite damage in “Are termites chewing away at your investment?” But in case you aren’t convinced of the damage they can do, here are a few more images from my colleague’s husband.

We understand that sometimes it’s difficult to tell the difference between termites and flying ants, so here are some handy tips to make sure you can tell whether you have an ant problem, or a far more serious termite problem.

As you can see from the photos, it’s  essential to maintain your pest control services and building maintenance during lockdown. A professional pest control service can provide peace of mind that you won’t  come back to find your assets in tatters.

I joined Rentokil Initial South Africa in 2004 as the PA to the MD, and after 6 months maternity leave I re-joined the Company in 2009 as the Marketing Co-ordinator for Rentokil. I'm now the Marketing Communication Manager for Rentokil Initial. I'm still terrified of cockroaches (Americana's only!) but the rest of the creepy crawlies we deal with don't really bug me (see what I did there?), so I guess I'm in the right industry! I am passionate about what we do here at Rentokil Initial and also write for our Hygiene Blog, which can be found at www.initial.co.za. Life outside of Rentokil mostly revolves around my daughter, who has just turned nine and my husband (who’s a bit older). I love living in Cape Town and wouldn’t trade living here for anywhere else in the world.
