Love your bed, not the bugs: How to protect your home this Season

February is a month of closeness. Sleeping alone, sharing a bed with a partner, or welcoming children who climb in at night — however you rest this season, your bed should be a place of comfort, not itching and irritation. After the busy travel season, many South African households face an increased risk of bed bugs entering the home. Unlike many pests, bed bugs are primarily a residential problem, affecting homes of all lifestyles, income levels, and sizes.

Bed Bugs Don’t Discriminate

Bed bugs are not linked to hygiene or cleanliness. They travel quietly between:

  • Hotels and guest houses
  • Flights, taxis and public transport
  • Suitcases, clothing and bedding

A single overnight stay or shared space can be enough for bed bugs to hitch a ride home — and because they’re small and excellent at hiding, they often go unnoticed at first.

Common Signs You May Have Bed Bugs

  • Itchy bites appearing overnight, often in small clusters or lines
  • Blood spots or rust-coloured marks on sheets or pillowcases
  • Small dark stains along mattress seams, bed frames or headboards
  • Unexplained skin irritation affecting one or more household members

For families, repeated itching and disrupted sleep can be distressing. For couples and individuals, bed bugs can turn what should be a safe, intimate space into a source of ongoing stress.

Early Detection Matters

One of the biggest challenges with bed bugs is how difficult they are to find. By the time bites become frequent, the infestation may already be established — making it harder and more costly to control.

This is why early detection is the most effective form of protection.

How the Lureking Bed Bug Monitor Helps Protect Your Home

Rentokil uses the Lureking Bed Bug Monitor as part of a proactive approach to bed bug control.

The monitor is:

  • Non-toxic and chemical-free, safe for families and pets
  • Discreet and compact, fitting easily under beds or behind furniture
  • Designed for early detection, trapping bed bugs before infestations spread

Bed bugs can enter the monitor easily, but once inside, they become stuck on pressure-sensitive glue — allowing activity to be identified early, often before bites become a persistent issue.

Seasonal Protection After Travel

Bed bug activity often increases after peak travel periods. February is an ideal time to check bedrooms, guest rooms and sleeping areas, especially if you or your guests have travelled recently.

Using bed bug monitors as part of regular home checks can help protect your space long-term, rather than reacting once discomfort begins.

Love Where You Sleep

Valentine’s month is about care, comfort and connection. Protecting your bed is an act of care — whether for yourself, your partner or your family. Don’t wait for bites to tell you something’s wrong. And remember to visit our guide on how to bid farewell to bed bugs this season!

Early detection can stop a small problem from becoming a lasting disruption.
