Termites are generally regarded as one of the most destructive pests, a species of wood boring insect termites are known to cause millions in property damage across the world. You may be thinking “I live in a home made of brick and is on a concrete slab I should be safe”.
Mythbusted
There’s a common myth that buildings that are made of brick are safe from termite damage. Though termites do not eat brick, there are many structural materials that termites will want to feast on, things such as doors, roof frames, furniture etc. that are susceptible to damage.
Termites are known to thrive in dark and humid environments, therefore homes on concrete slabs make it an easier target for termites, they find comfort in the dark and wet conditions underneath the slabs. Furthermore, subterranean termites are able to use cracks and voids in concrete and foundation walls to invade your home in their search for a food source.
Signs of Termites
- Papery or hollow sounding timber – When termites consume timber, they eat from the inside out, leaving a thin veneer of timber or paint.
- Your vacuum goes through the skirting board
- Tight fitting door or hard to open window – As termites devour timber, their excrement or ‘mud’ creates a protective environment that traps heat and moisture. This causes timber to swell, making it harder to open a window or close a door.
- Cracks in the cornice or door jams
- Termite mud
